Melinas nerviglumis or Ruby Grass, is a lovely pink flowered ornamental grass. The small grass clumps grow between 15-24 inches tall and 1 foot wide. The plants will begin blooming in mid summer. The pink flowers sparkle in the sunlight. They will age gracefully to a tan color. The foliage is a pretty blue green and adds another layer of color to the garden. Savannah Ruby Grass is a tender perennial in zones 8 and warmer. I garden in zone 6 and treat this as an annual grass.
Each seed packet contains approximately 50 seeds. The seed is still in its grassy fluff. I haven't been able to figure out a way to clean more thoroughly. This does not affect germination and is actually easier to handle the tiny seeds. I planted several in plugs and all have germinated in 7-14 days. Planting 4-6 seeds per pot will produce a fuller clump. Many large commercial seed companies sell this as 'pelletized' seeds which encapsulates multiple seeds in one pellet to produce the same result. Each seed order will come with growing and cultivation instructions.
