Eastern Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis is native throughout much of the United States. It is also commonly known as the American columbine. This perennial plant bears loads of nodding bell shaped flowers. The flowers are a rich red with bright yellow stamens and are a magnet for early arriving hummingbirds.
Eastern Red Columbine is perennial in zones 3-8. It the wild it is found growing in a wide range of conditions from woodlands to rocky slopes. The plant will grow in full sun to part shade. The plants may need additional moisture when grown in full sun. The plants will form a tidy clump of blue green foliage. Flower stems will rise up to 2 feet in late spring and early summer.
